Being a parent isn’t always easy, especially if your child has a speech disorder or a speech impediment. The first step is to have your child be evaluated by a speech therapist. Unfortunately, the results are not as cut and dry as we want. To help you obtain the best results for your child, here are a few things to discuss with your speech therapist.

Prognosis

Developing fundamental communication concepts is vital for success. Speech therapy is important since language skills sequentially build on each other, which means if there are gaps or delays in the process, it can affect a child’s ability to learn, as wells future success.

“What we know is that the sooner the issues are addressed by a professional, the better chance the child has of getting on that normal developmental progression,” said Elise Davis-McFarland, president of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Type of treatment and duration

After your child has been evaluated, the speech therapist will explain the results. The type of treatment, goals, length, and how often they should be scheduled.  The duration depends on the severity of speech disorder, type of therapy, and targeted goals.

The treatment and duration also depends on the child, their needs, and age. A specific plan, your therapist should have a specially designed treatment for your child, and discuss that with you in detail.

If your child is easily fatigued or has attention issues, more frequent and shorter sessions may more advantageous.

Expectations and goals for success

Consistency and early intervention are key, they can have a big impact on your child’s development.

Not only does it improve their ability to communicate, it improves how they interact, their social skills, and emotional development. It also provides guidance and support for parents and caregivers.

When we equip a child with the skills, knowledge, and confidence, they will grow up to be the best they can be.
