Children, especially toddlers, develop speech and language skills at different rates. Supporting them on the their communication journey is key. Here are a few of our most frequently asked questions about speech and language development.

If my 2 or 3 year old child isn’t talking yet, but seems to understand what I say, should I be concerned?

If your toddler isn’t talking, but understands what you say, this may be an expressive language delay. This refers to verbal and nonverbal communication, the words they use to speak as well as pointing and gesturing.

An expressive language disorder can be very frustrating for everyone.  Your child knows what they want to say, but when they begin to talk, it doesn’t translate into clear sentences. Children two years of age, should be able to use about 50 words.

My child is 3 years old, what are the typical speech and language milestones I should be watching for?

By 2 years old, they should be able to engage in short conversations, use two word phrases, start to use pronouns, such as mine, my, me, verbally make requests, answer simple questions, and start to communicate their emotions and feelings verbally, instead of physically.

My 2 year old is babbling, but not talking or using words, does he need speech therapy?

Your child may be having difficulty turning sounds into words. Though, some babbling that is followed by words and gestures can be normal. It is best to speak with a speech therapist if you have concerns. Early intervention will help develop the communication skill they need in school and life.

Early Intervention Is Key

Don’t panic if your child seems a little behind or not talking as much as other toddlers. Often times, children just need a little extra help. Early intervention is important, communication milestones build on each other. So, when one isn’t reached in the typical timeframe, they can end up falling behind.
