Are you concerned with your child’s fluency of speech? Maybe a teacher or pediatrician said something about their fluency. What does fluency of speech mean?

The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA), defines “A fluency disorder is an interruption to the flow of speech that can negatively impact an individual’s communication effectiveness, communication efficiency, and willingness to speak.”

“Fluency refers to continuity, smoothness, rate, and effort in speech production. Individuals may hesitate when speaking, use filler words (e.g., “like” or “uh”), or repeat a word or phrase. These behaviors are called typical disfluencies or “stuttering-like disfluencies.””

Having a fluency disorder can cause your child anxiety, frustration and reluctant to participate in verbal communication.

“Stuttering may also include tension and negative feelings about talking. People who stutter may avoid certain sounds and words, avoid going places where they think they might stutter, and have extra movements in their mouth, face, and body when they try hard to get words out.”

Speech and language therapy can help unlock your child’s voice and help them have control over their speech. By helping them overcome the challenges, using evidence based techniques, and providing personalized support, to improve fluency of speech.

Addressing underlying factors that may be contributing to the issue and learning effective strategies to help them regain their confidence and strengthen their communication skills.
